When your computer just won't turn on
🔌 1. Confirm the basics
-
Make sure the power cable is firmly plugged into both the wall outlet and the PC.
-
Try a different outlet or power strip. Outlets fail more often than people think.
-
If it’s a laptop, check that the charger light turns on. Try a different charger if available.
⚡ 2. Check the power supply and indicators
-
Look for any signs of life: fans spinning, lights blinking, keyboard lighting up.
-
If your desktop has a power supply switch on the back, ensure it’s set to ON.
-
Some PCs have a small power indicator light on the motherboard—if it’s off, the PSU may not be delivering power.
🔘 3. Try a power reset
This fixes a surprising number of “dead PC” situations.
-
Unplug the PC completely.
-
Hold the power button for 10–15 seconds to discharge leftover power.
-
Plug it back in and try again.
🔋 4. For laptops: rule out battery issues
-
Remove the battery (if removable), plug in the charger, and try powering on.
-
If it turns on without the battery, the battery may be dead or faulty.
🖥️ 5. Inspect external hardware
A bad peripheral can block startup.
-
Disconnect everything except power, monitor, and keyboard.
-
Try turning it on again.
🧩 6. Listen and observe
-
Any beeps? (These can indicate hardware errors.)
-
Any fan movement for a split second? (Often points to power supply or motherboard issues.)
🧰 7. If it still won’t turn on
The next suspects are:
-
Power supply failure (very common in desktops)
-
Faulty RAM or improperly seated RAM
-
Loose internal cables
-
Motherboard issues
